On 26th August 2024, Mr. Indrika Ratwatte, Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General (DSRSG)/Resident Coordinator (RC)/Humanitarian Coordinator (HC) in Pakistan, met with Mr. Amir Muqam Federal Minister for States and Frontier Regions (SAFRON). The meeting was attended by Mr. Zafar Hassan Secretary SAFRON, Mr. Muhammad Abbas Khan Chief Commissioner for Afghan Refugees, Mr. Shakeel Muhammad Khan Safi Commissioner for Afghan Refugees, KP, and Mr. Waseem Agha Joint Secretary SAFRON. They discussed important issues concerning Afghan refugees in Pakistan, focusing on enhancing cooperation to address the challenges and improve the support provided to the refugee community.
Mr. Ratwatte acknowledged Pakistan’s immense contribution over the last 40 years in hosting Afghan refugees and recognized the burden this has placed on the country’s resources. He emphasized the importance of continued dialogue with the Afghan government and the creation of a conducive environment for refugees to return to their homeland. Mr. Ratwatte also stressed the need for collaborative efforts through the Ministry of SAFRON to ensure a safe and peaceful solution for Afghan refugees in Afghanistan, reinforcing Pakistan’s commitment to global humanitarian efforts.
